Established in 2004 as a Network of Excellence funded by the European Union research Framework Programme, it was known as ALTER-Net. After EU funding stopped, in 2009, the network’s operations continued with support of membership fees. These operations include the organisation of conferences, workshops and an annual summer school. Members also join up in writing publications and developing international research projects. Furthermore, the network enables ecosystem research input into EU biodiversity-related policy.
As from now, the network operates as a legal entity, an international not-for-profit association. Such change requires a new branding. To start with, you now spell it Alternet. It’s not an acronym, but a brand name that now refers to ‘the European Science-Policy Interface on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services’. The existing logo has been redesigned and a new website is launched.
